One of the biggest questions I get asked is, “What is it like traveling the world and being a digital nomad?” Is it all beaches, pina coladas, and epic cultural experiences? It’s different everywhere I go, but this video shows you what it’s like to be a digital nomad in Playa Avellanas, Costa Rica.
Playa Avellanas, is a little community in the jungle about 30 minutes from Tamarindo, Costa Rica. We decided to stay at Villas de Avellanas because it’s a 20-minute walk minute to the beach and there are better waves than in Tamarindo.

My boyfriend and I basically wake up, work, and surf everyday. We check the waves at Surfline (we’d walk out to them to check them, but it’s a bit of a walk), if waves are good, we head out to surf, if not, we work until high tide, then head out to surf!
I’m a Digital Content Consultant, which consists of a lot of strategizing around how to help different companies build their digital communities and build their brands.
My boyfriend is an entrepreneur and digital marketer. Typically, we chat about work and bounce ideas off each other all day.
Sometimes, with waves outside your door, it can get a little hard to focus…
Most nights we Netflix and chill. Or Netflix and argue about we want to watch. Or work some more. But if it’s the weekend, and we are feeling up to it, we’ll head out.
Sometimes, we play beer pong at Sharkys on Sunday nights…Other nights, we grab a slice of the famous banana cream pie at Nouigis and watch the sunset…Thursday night is reggae night at Pacifico, which is another fun option.
The difference between being a digital nomad and being on vacation is you really do get into a routine. You’re not being a tourist everyday and checking out everything that there is to do. Instead you travel slow and try to experience what it would really be like to live somewhere.
